SPEAKING: CVS (chorionic villus sampling)

What is chorionic villus sampling?

Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is a prenatal test that detects chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome, as well as a host of other genetic disorders. The doctor takes cells from tiny fingerlike projections on the placenta called the chorionic villi and sends them to a lab for genetic analysis.

The main advantage of CVS over amniocentesis is that you can have it done earlier — generally between 11 and 12 weeks of pregnancy, although some testing centers will do it as late as 13 weeks, 6 days. (For an amnio, you'll have to wait until you're at least 16 weeks pregnant.)

Women who choose to have CVS or amniocentesis are primarily those at increased risk for genetic and chromosomal problems, in part because these tests are invasive and carry a small risk of miscarriage.

GROUP WORK
Situation
The participants now are discussing materials assigned to them in a group work.
Margaretha:    Girls … like we did before … let’s have a review again by reading  in turn … maybe we can start with Eny … please.

Eny:                   Ok … some of the blood cells of the fetus usually do get into the mother’s circulation where they have been known to survive for decades … your turn Laura …

Laura:              This raises the possibility of doing prenatal diagnosis of genetic disorder by sampling the mother’s blood rather than having to rely on the more invasive procedures of amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling …

Margaretha:    Yes … that is called CVS … it’s now Zaenab please.

Zainab:             The leakage of mother’s blood cells into the fetus is far larger. However it does occur. A few pregnant women with leukemia or lymphoma have transferred the malignancy to their fetus.
Margaretha:     Yes … some babies have also acquired melanoma from the transpalacenta passage of these highly malignancy cells from their mother.
